Smart Grid “Aktivhaus B10” Becomes Part of a Virtual Power Plant

The energy management system alphaEOS is in the position to communicate with the virtual power plant and can make anticipatory decisions regarding the ideal timing to feed electricity into the grid, to intermediately store it or to obtain electricity from the grid – all in line with current market requirements.

The 70 square meter photovoltaic system of the Aktivhaus B10 produces roughly 8.300 kilowatt hours of electricity per year – about twice as much as required for building operations and electric mobility.

“The PV-energy which is generated in addition doesn’t necessarily have to be fed into the grid when the sun is shining”, Jonathan Busse chairman of the alphaEOS AG explains,” The energy is fed in when the demand within the grid reaches its peak.” Household appliances with control systems, such as dishwashers or washing machines will run preferably when cheap energy is either available from the grid or produced by the roof system or provided by the energy storage. Thus the system also makes a contribution to the stability of the local power grid. Two electric Smarts, provided by the Dailmer AG, are also being charged with the grid-compatible PV-energy.

“By integrating the energy generation system of the Aktivhaus into the pool of our virtual power plant, we expect new insights regarding the economic connection of producers and consumers with a low power capacity”, Jochen Schwill, co-founder and co-managing director of Next Kraftwerke GmbH explains. “When it comes to realizing the energy transition the flexibility of renewable energies is a vital element.”

The research project Aktivhaus B10 belongs to the interconnected projects of the Showcase Programme (“Schaufenster Elektromobilität”), which is sponsored by the federal government of Germany. The project partners alphaEOS, the Werner Sobek Group, and the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design (ILEK) at the University of Stuttgart explore new solutions regarding the interconnection of electric mobility and built environment. Other project partners are SchwörerHaus and the Daimler AG.

The Aktivhaus B10 helps to investigate how innovative materials, construction techniques and technologys will improve our built environment in a sustainable way. Thanks to a sophisticated energy concept and an anticipatory and autodidactic building automation, the building generates twice the energy of its power demand from a renewable source. The combination of mobile and immobile infrastructure provides a promising approach towards an integrated a decentralized energy supply system for electric mobility within out built environment. B10 is a decentralized supplier of energy and a provider of emission-free electric mobility.

As an intelligent component of the Energy System of Tomorrow the house is interconnected within the surrounding quarter and provides renewable energy to the close-by museum of Weißenhof, as well as to additional electric cars.
